Arne Naess 1912 – 2009

Arne Naess (1912 – 2009) was a Norwegian philosopher of the Contemporary era, associated with Analytic Philosophy and Continental Philosophy.

Arne Naess was a Norwegian philosopher, the youngest person ever appointed to a full professorship at the University of Oslo, and the founder of the deep ecology movement. His early Interpretation and Preciseness developed an empirical theory of meaning, while his later Ecology, Community and Lifestyle distinguished a deep ecology, grounded in the intrinsic value of all living beings, from the merely shallow ecology of human welfare. His Ecosophy T offered a personal philosophical framework in which the maturing self extends its identification outward, ultimately to the whole of nature, in what he called Self-realization.
