Beatrijs of Nazareth 1200 – 1268

Beatrijs of Nazareth (1200 – 1268) was a Flemish philosopher of the Medieval era, associated with Christian Philosophy.

Beatrijs of Nazareth was a thirteenth-century Cistercian nun, mystic, and philosopher of the Low Countries, prioress of the abbey of Our Lady of Nazareth near Lier in the southern Low Countries. Her Seven Manners of Love, the only surviving work in her own Middle Dutch hand, set out a philosophical phenomenology of the seven progressive ways in which divine love possesses the soul, from the first stirring desire for purification through the wounded longing of the third manner to the final manner in which the soul rests in eternity in the very being of God. Her work belongs, with Hadewijch and Mechthild, to the great Beguine and Cistercian mystical philosophy of thirteenth-century Northern Europe.
