Most Famous Dutch Philosophers

Dutch philosophy in the early modern period punched far above its demographic weight. Erasmus's humanism shaped the intellectual conditions of the Reformation; Hugo Grotius founded modern international law and natural-rights theory; and Spinoza produced one of the most rigorous and audacious metaphysical systems in the Western tradition. Anna Maria van Schurman became the first woman formally admitted to a European university and a major figure in seventeenth-century learned correspondence; Jacobus Arminius developed the theological position that became the foundation of Arminianism.

The Dutch Republic of the seventeenth century was the freest and most tolerant intellectual environment in Europe, and its philosophical output reflects that. The thinkers below include the founders of modern international law, modern naturalistic metaphysics, and Renaissance humanism.
