Faustus Socinus 1539 – 1604

Faustus Socinus (1539 – 1604) was an Italian philosopher of the Modern era, associated with Christian Philosophy and Renaissance.

Fausto Sozzini, Latinized as Faustus Socinus, was an Italian theologian and the principal figure of the radical anti-Trinitarian wing of the Reformation. Drawing on the writings of his uncle Lelio Sozzini and on his own systematic reflection, he settled among the Polish Brethren and from Cracow shaped the doctrine of what would later be called Socinianism: a strict unitarianism, a rejection of original sin and substitutionary atonement, an insistence on the rational reading of Scripture, and an early advocacy of religious toleration. His De Iesu Christo Servatore circulated across Europe and influenced English Latitudinarian theology and the modern Unitarian tradition.
