Felwine Sarr is a Senegalese philosopher, economist, and writer, professor at Duke University and the author of works on the philosophy of Africa, the meaning of development, and the restitution of colonial-era cultural objects. Afrotopia argued that the renewal of African self-understanding cannot consist in catching up to Europe, but requires the invention of an African utopia drawn from the continent's own intellectual, religious, and economic resources. With the historian Benedicte Savoy he co-authored the 2018 report on the restitution of African cultural heritage in French museums that has reshaped contemporary debates on cultural property and reparation.
