Gabrielle Suchon 1632 – 1703

Gabrielle Suchon (1632 – 1703) was a French philosopher of the Modern era, associated with Early Modern Philosophy and Feminism.

Gabrielle Suchon was a French philosopher and one of the most original feminist political philosophers of the Grand Siecle, who escaped the Dominican convent into which her family had placed her and lived as a freelance writer in seventeenth-century Lyon. Her Treatise on Morality and Politics, published in 1693 under the pseudonym G. S. Aristophile, mounted a sustained Aristotelian and Thomist defense of women's rights to liberty, knowledge, and authority, and against the threefold deprivation of these goods imposed on women by custom and law. Her shorter On the Celibate Life Freely Chosen offered the first sustained philosophical defense of voluntary single life as a vocation rather than a misfortune.
