Mahmoud Mohamed Taha 1909 – 1985
Mahmoud Mohamed Taha (1909 – 1985) was a Sudanese philosopher of the Contemporary era, associated with Islamic Philosophy and Political Philosophy.
Mahmoud Mohamed Taha was a Sudanese Islamic reformer, philosopher, and engineer, the founder of the Republican Brothers, a small but intellectually powerful movement that defended a renewed Islamic philosophy of religious freedom, gender equality, and democratic socialism. His Second Message of Islam distinguished the Meccan period of the Quran, with its universal ethical principles, from the Medinan period of legal accommodation, and argued that a just modern Muslim society must take its principal guidance from the Meccan rather than the Medinan revelation. Convicted of apostasy by President Nimeiry's Sudanese government, he was publicly hanged in Khartoum on 18 January 1985 at the age of seventy-six.
