Maria Lugones 1944 – 2020

Maria Lugones (1944 – 2020) was an Argentine-American philosopher of the Contemporary era, associated with Feminism and Postcolonial Philosophy.

Maria Lugones was an Argentine-American philosopher, long associated with Binghamton University, and a foundational figure in decolonial feminism and Latina philosophy. Pilgrimages/Peregrinajes developed her notion of world-traveling as the practice by which oppressed subjects move between the multiple worlds in which they are differently constituted, while her later essays on the coloniality of gender argued that the modern category of gender itself is a colonial imposition, inseparable from the racialized division of labor of the conquest. Her work has shaped contemporary Latin American, women-of-color, and decolonial thought.
