Mark Eugenikos 1392 – 1444

Mark Eugenikos (1392 – 1444) was a Byzantine philosopher of the Medieval era, associated with Christian Philosophy and Platonism.

Mark Eugenikos was a Byzantine philosopher, theologian, and Metropolitan of Ephesus, who attended the Council of Florence of 1438-39 as the principal philosophical and theological representative of the Greek delegation and as the only senior Greek bishop to refuse to sign the act of union with the Latin Church. His writings against the Latin doctrines of the Filioque, of purgatory, and of papal authority defended the integrity of the Byzantine theological inheritance against the philosophical-political pressure of the dying empire, and made him a hero of the post-Byzantine Orthodox tradition. He died less than five years before the fall of Constantinople, holding to the convictions for which he had stood almost alone among his colleagues.
