Nakae Chomin 1847 – 1901

Nakae Chomin (1847 – 1901) was a Japanese philosopher of the Modern era, associated with Political Philosophy.

Nakae Chomin was a Japanese journalist, translator, and political philosopher and one of the principal voices of the Meiji-period Freedom and People's Rights movement. After studies in France in the early 1870s, he returned to Japan as a passionate advocate of Rousseauean popular sovereignty and produced an admired Japanese translation of Rousseau's Social Contract that gave him the lasting nickname of the Rousseau of the Orient. His Discourse on Three Drunkards on Government, the Draft of a Discourse, and his many newspaper essays argued for constitutional limits on imperial power, the rights of citizens, and the careful integration of Western political thought with Japanese tradition. He died of throat cancer at fifty-four.
