Padmasambhava c. 720 – c. 800

Padmasambhava (c. 720 – c. 800) was an Indian-Tibetan philosopher of the Medieval era, associated with Buddhism.

Padmasambhava, the Lotus-Born, was an eighth-century Buddhist tantric master from the kingdom of Uddiyana in the northwest of the Indian subcontinent, who, according to Tibetan tradition, was invited by the king Trisong Detsen to assist in the establishment of Buddhism in Tibet. He is credited with subduing the local pre-Buddhist deities and binding them to the service of the Dharma, with founding the great monastery of Samye, and with concealing throughout the Tibetan landscape a vast body of teachings, the so-called terma or revealed treasures, to be discovered by later generations as needed. He is the supreme master of the Nyingma school of Tibetan Buddhism and is venerated as a second Buddha across the entire Tibetan world.
