Vladimir Solovyov Quotes on Politics

Vladimir Solovyov (1853–1900), the founding figure of the late-nineteenth-century Russian religious philosophical revival, gave Russian political philosophy its most ambitious Christian-universalist programme in The Justification of the Good (1897) and the long sequence of essays on the Jewish question, on church reunion, and on the relation between the spiritual and temporal powers. The framework treats political authority as legitimate only as the instrument of the gradual realization of the kingdom of God in history — the "free theocracy" in which church, state, and prophetic society cooperate without coercion — and defends an explicitly ecumenical programme of reconciliation between Catholicism, Orthodoxy, and Protestantism against the nationalist confessional politics then dominant in the Russian Empire and beyond.
