Walter Mignolo b. 1941
Walter Mignolo (born 1941) is an Argentine-American philosopher of the Contemporary era, associated with Postcolonial Philosophy and Continental Philosophy.
Walter Mignolo is an Argentine-American semiotician and decolonial theorist, professor at Duke University, and one of the founding figures of the Latin American decolonial school. The Darker Side of the Renaissance and The Idea of Latin America reread the European invention of modernity as inseparable from the colonization of the Americas, in which the subjugation of indigenous peoples and African slavery were not the dark side of progress but its constitutive ground. Local Histories/Global Designs and The Darker Side of Western Modernity have given the program of decoloniality much of its current vocabulary, including the notions of border thinking, coloniality of power, and pluriversality.
