Bernard Stiegler 1952 – 2020

Bernard Stiegler (1952 – 2020) was a French philosopher of the Contemporary era, associated with Continental Philosophy and Post-Structuralism.

Bernard Stiegler was a French philosopher of technology, a former pupil of Jacques Derrida, and one of the most original thinkers of digital culture in the late twentieth and early twenty-first centuries. His three-volume Technics and Time argued, against Heidegger, that the human is constituted by its technical prostheses, and that there is no humanity prior to the tools through which it remembers and acts. In For a New Critique of Political Economy, Taking Care of Youth and the Generations, and The Age of Disruption he diagnosed the cultural and psychic consequences of industrial and algorithmic capitalism, proposing the notion of the pharmakon, at once poison and remedy, as a key to political and educational repair.
