Mark Eugenikos Quotes

Mark Eugenikos was a Byzantine philosopher, theologian, and Metropolitan of Ephesus, who attended the Council of Florence of 1438-39 as the principal philosophical and theological representative of the Greek delegation and as the only senior Greek bishop to refuse to sign the act of union with the Latin Church. His writings against the Latin doctrines of the Filioque, of purgatory, and of papal authority defended the integrity of the Byzantine theological inheritance against the philosophical-political pressure of the dying empire, and made him a hero of the post-Byzantine Orthodox tradition. The quotes below are attributed to Mark Eugenikos, organized by topic.

  • Attributed to Mark Eugenikos:

“The empire will pass; the truth abides.”
